Minimalist Text Turns Your Android into a Work of Art
Minimalistic Text is an Android app that allows you to create widgets that displays time, date, calendar information, weather, and battery and system information in text format. There are several preset widgets and the layout of the widget can customizable through the layout editor. It is really hard for me to explain. I just download it and gave it a try and figured it out easy enough. A bit daunting at first glance.

Microsoft Surface Pricing
Microsoft Surface |
The Microsoft Surface Tablet is now available in the Philippines. Microsoft hopes it can take aways some of the market from Apples iPad which makes up a little more than over half of the tablets sold.
The 32 GB version of the Microsoft Surface is priced at Php29,999, which is a bit more than the expected Php28,990 price of the Apple iPad 4 32 GB WiFi when it gets here. Given that the Microsoft Surface comes with MS Office Home & Student (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One Note), it price priced to match the price of the Apple iPad 4 32 GB WiFi.
People who would choose a Microsoft Surface over an iPad would mainly do so because of MS Office or the keyboard, for office type software. Getting the Touch Keyboard Cover with a 32 GB Microsoft Surface brings the price up to Php33,999. If you really plan to do a fair bit of typing with the Microsoft Surface, than the Type Keyboard Cover is the better choice. This would bring the price up to Php 36,998.
The 64 GB version of the Microsoft Surface is also available, but only together with a bundled for a total price of Php37,999.
The pricing is competitive, but it will not be an iPad killer.
First, you can buy an iPad 2 for as low as Php18,990 or in a few weeks get an iPad 4 16 GB WiFi model for Php23,990. Microsoft has no Surface models available to compete at this price points.
Second, even those who want a 32 GB or 64 GB tablet, the iPad is a better choice, unless you really want the keyboard or MS Office. The iPad has more apps.
Me, I would be in the marker for a ultraportable laptop like device. If I bought a Microsoft Surface, I would get the 32 GB model with a Type Keyboard Cover. That would cost me all of Php36,998. Now the question is, for Php36,998 is there anything else I would like better?
Asus Transformer Pad TF300T |
There is the Android powered Asus Transformer Pad TF300T 32 GB with a Mobile Keyboard Dock for Php24,990. The Microsoft Surface Keyboard Cover is so thin it feels like you are not carrying a keyboard around. The Asus Transformer Pad which looked innovative last year, looks cumbersome and bulky with the sleek ingenious surface design. But still that is all of 12K cheaper.
Another option would be to get a Asus VivoBok x202e. This starts as low as Php20,990 and combines a touchscreen and Windows 8.
In sum, the Microsoft Surface is priced reasonably and has no direct competition for those who want a tablet with a keyboard. I just would not expect to see to many of these things at the local Starbucks.

LeakyLeak Nokia Lumia 928 renders – with Xenon Flash coming to Verizon
A render of the much rumored handsets has just been leaked by @evleaks - here’s the Nokia Lumia 928 renders.
Xenon Flash
Polycarbonate body
PureView Camera
Verizon branding
Fabula design (as with 920)
4G LTE
Also has LED
Contrary to what most rumors have been saying about Verizon’s handset it does NOT have an aluminum/metal casing (which I know some of you were hoping for); however it does make up for it with the a Xenon flash. The first Lumia in fact to carry such a flash, which should come to a relief to many of you out there; especially since some have gone as far as stating that a Pureview without Xenon flash, is not worthy of the Pureview title at all.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Will Be Released On April As Planned
Yesterday we got indications that the Samsung Galaxy S II launch will be delayed by as much as a month. But now Samsung stepped up and announced (via Twitter) that the Samsung Galaxy S II flagship will still arrive on time in April to scheduled markets.
Unfortunately, theres no concrete information about which markets will be getting the Galaxy S II first.
The company also said that the device will be "gradually rolled out in each market according to the local launch timetable". It sounds laconic enough. It may mean that the Galaxy S II will hit everywhere, just gradually, not in huge numbers. Or that key European markets will be getting it first. We can only guess.
Were yet to see whats what with the Galaxy S II. As you know it already came in for a preview and were currently working with it.

Yup Google has acquired Motorola Mobility
Google CEO Larry Page has just announced that the company has at last completed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, which has been in the works for around 9 months now. Originally announced in August of last year, Google had plenty of regulatory approval hurdles in its way before it could finalize the move; but with the approval of the acquisition coming from China a few days ago, the company was finally able to seal the deal. Motorola Mobility has now been acquired by Google for $12.5 billion, meaning that the company paid $40 per share.
So, now that the deal has been closed, what’s happening now? Well, effective immediately, Motorola Mobility is no longer trading on the NYSE. Sanjay Jha – credited by Page as someone who made a big bet on Android early on – has stepped down, with Google employee Dennis Woodside taking over as the new CEO. Page praised his work at Google, stating that he had worked throughout the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Russia to expand Google’s business there. He also more recently helped to grow revenue in the U.S. from $10.8 billion to $17.5 billion.
Now, I wonder what’s in store for the company in the coming months and years, though; there have been rumors of post-acquisition layoffs, as Google trims down the company down to something that it would like to work with.
They certainly seem pretty enthusiastic about the acquisition, with Page remarking back in August that this move will help to supercharge the Android ecosystem (reassuring everyone, however, that this doesn’t mean that Google will stop working with other Android hardware manufacturers.) But what was the point of shelling out $12.5 billion to acquire a mobile hardware manufacturer for a platform that Google licenses out to everyone anyways? Considering that Google has been a victim of patent wars fought by Apple and Microsoft, the company did state that they wanted Motorola Mobility’s established repository of patents to defend Android against litigation from competitors’ “anti-competitive” litigation.
Thus, Google felt that this acquisition was actually a pro-competitive move to help defend its platform against all of the recent litigation. Google’s relationship with Motorola Mobility moving forward versus that with other manufacturers should be interesting to see as well, on top of what public perception of that relationship will be. Microsoft and Nokia are two very close companies, and some already regard them as the best manufacturer to go with when it comes to Windows Phone partially for that reason.
Smart LTE Official Launched! Pricing and Coverage
Smart Communications officially launched its LTE service that it has been testing since last year. The plan is for a high speed broadband only accessible via a Huawei E392 USB modem which comes free as part of the plan.
How fast? Up to 42 Mbps. How much? Well, the price for the plan it a fairly high Php3,500 per month for a total of 10 GB of bandwidth, but that is actual reasonable if you compare it to similar services abroad. Please note, the 10 GB limit covers both upload and download. Over and above the 10GB, you will be charged Php450 per month. It is not clear to me yet how you measure you use.
Click for a larger image |
The biggest disappointment is coverage. Right now only 49 locations are covered by LTE. Where there is no LTE you can still connect to HSPA+, HSPA, 3G, EDGE, GPRS towers, which is still chargeable against your 10 GB bandwidth cap.
Now Type your sms emails without pressing button just write it in the wind!
A new feature is coming to new mobile year. Instead of pressing button on your mobile, you can now write sms only touch your smartphone. But now the scientist makes it easier for smartphone user. You can now write your sms in wind. It will attach with modern smartphone.
It was predicted by the Institution of technology that you can now write sms in wind with a techno based glove. The text will be identified by the particular digital character conversion technology. So in this way it is possible to write.
The Glove is connected to the rotary motion of object detection apparatus (Jairaskopa and ekasileromitara). This Technology can identify specific characters from hand movement. The alphabet for each character unique signal design technique, the sample will be saved and will be able to identify the different types of handwriting.
It also can identify eight thousand words, as well as be able to identify the full sentence. This technology has now made it easier and trying to give modernize by inventor Kristopha Ayama.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 0 LEAKS
There wasn’t much in the mobile arena from Samsung at CES, but that should change at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. Samsung will be there and it is expected to announce a refreshed line of smartphones and tablets. According to a report in Sammobile, one device on tap may be the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0.
Leaked information provided to Sammobile suggests the Note 8.0 will have an 8-inch Super Clear LCD display with 1280×800 resolution, 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of internal storage and connectivity options like Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n. It’ll also sport a 5-megapixel primary camera and a 1.3-megapixel secondary camera. The Note 8 will be powered by Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
These are rumored specs for a rumored device, so don’t bet the farm on them. We will have to wait until MWC 2013 to find out if they pan out. A launch board for new mobile devices, MWC 2013 will be held February 25-28 in Barcelona, Spain.

Google I O 2012 Day 1 Kenotes
The kenote is shaping up to be incredibly packed already. The timer is counting down and the event is almost started. Vic just took the stage and is talking about how there are many surprises still left to announce today.
Hugo Barra is next on stage talking about Android momentum. Last year at Google I/O there were 100 million devices, now there are 400 million activated android devices. Daily activations are also now up to over 1 million.
Next up - Jellybean is now official, Android 4.1.
Part of Android 4.1 is project butter, which is a number of improvements in smoothness. Fast UI is the number one priority of project butter. Triple buffering have been added in the Android 4.1 graphics pipeline, along with some touch anticipation and improvements to the governor to quickly ramp the CPU appropriately.
Google has added a new system trace tool aptly named systrace, which appears to show the time for each step taken in drawing a frame to the framebuffer. Systrace is now a part of the Android SDK as well.
Some comparisons in device framerate between ICS 4.0 and JB 4.1 is up next. At very high framerate capture speeds, the difference is substantial. Im super excited about seeing how much improvement project butter has made to the UI smoothness.
Some JB 4.1 features are up next. Widget placement is now dynamic - moving widgets around snaps the adjacent ones around complete with dynamic resizing.
Keyboard dictionaries have been improved, along with predictive typing enhancements that look somewhat similar to Swiftkey 3. Voice recognition and typing is now also available offline without a data connection. Arabic and Hebrew input support have been added, alongside a few others.
Jellybean adds improvements to accessibility for disabled users, including external braille support and gesture based input control.
Camera has also been improved in JB 4.1 as well. There are some gesures here that look very similar to the Windows Phone camera UI, including a simple live preview alongside captured photos, which can be deleted by swiping up.
Android Beam is now improved with NFC pairing for bluetooth devices, and files can be sent using NFC (Im guessing similar to WiFi Direct).
Notification improvements are next, including swipe to dismiss notifications and shortcuts from the notification shade. Quick responses are available, and no doubt other developers can add their own shortcuts. For example liking or dismissing items from social networks that appear in the shade. The notifications expand and collapse and can still be dismissed all at once.
Search in Jelly Bean is also getting revamped, with improved voice search and some semantic results that appear to be Googles answer to Siri. Randall demonstrated three queries, including a few challenging ones including asking for pictures of pygmy marmosets, this is absolutely Googles response to Siri on iOS.
Google now is the next announcement, which appears to have personalized data based on your transit history, search results, and location.
Google is showing off a ton of different semantic results and data queries that Google now can handle throughout the day. Google now is triggered by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or using the search box.
Google now consists of a number of cards which populate with this data as time goes on.
Mid july, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and Xoom will get the OTA updates, but the Preview SDK will be available now. Google is now going to be more proactive about getting OEMs and SoC makers the latest Android release quickly, with beta Platform Development Kit releases before major Android point updates.
Play store details are up next, with over 600 thousand applications and games, and 20 billion installs. Developer tools are also improving, including the ability to reply to user reviews. In Jellybean 4.1 and newer, paid applications will also be encrypted. Application updates are now also just binary diffs (or similar) instead of forcing a complete re-download of the APK. This is a big new feature for reducing cellular network bandwidth.
Google briefly touched on Google cloud messaging, though Im unclear if this is the rumored messaging product that I heard might be the answer to iMessage (in addition to Google Talk).
Google Play is getting new titles, including magazines and TV content.
Nexus 7 is now official, from ASUS and running Android 4.1. Display is 1280x800 HD, SoC is Tegra 3 (likely T30L), theres a front facing camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, gyro and accelerometer.
The Nexus 7 is being shown off, including video playback (which looked smooth) and interface performance, which looks good. The Nexus 7 ships with Chrome as the default browser, I havent seen any shots of the previous stock browser anymore, so Flash might be on its way out.
Improvements to maps include offline maps as a stock feature (no longer in Labs), and an indoor analogue to street view which works with the gyro. It looked incredibly smooth just like youd expect using that MEMS gyro.
Pricing for the Nexus 7 is $199 with a $25 credit for the Google Play store, along with a number of free titles from the market.
Nexus Q is the next topic, which is a companion device to Google Plays media library. The device has an OMAP4460 SoC inside, along with dual band WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth, and both analog and digital outputs. This is definitely Googles answer to Apple TV. Nexus Q will be available for $299, available for pre order soon, and shipping mid-July.
Vic is back up talking about massive improvements to Google+, including the Google+ applications. There are almost too many to list, but it looks like a dramatic set of sharing and engagement changes.
Surprise Google Glass demos are up now, from Sergey Brin. Theres a pair of skydivers wearing the Google Glass device and streaming a hangout video. Sharing what youre seeing live is an obvious part of Google Glass. Theres some sort of relay race which started first with two skydivers, then bicyclists on the roof of Moscone, and now rappelling down the side of the building.
More details are being given out about Glass. The device has an onboard camera, side touchpad for interaction, microphones, speaker, and the usual smartphone sensors (gyro, accelerometer, compass). There are multiple radios onboard for communication - not sure if that means cellular or just WiFi and bluetooth. The display field of view is placed above the eye, to not block normal vision. Emphasis on making the device light is important so it can be wearable. Google claims the latest prototype weighs less than many sunglasses.
Project Glass has two goals - sharing imagery, and getting rapid access to information. Capturing imagery through the point of view of the user is part of that first goal, along with scenes and parts of life that wouldnt normally be accessible with a traditional cameaara.
