Smartphones by the Numbers

500 million. Android No. 500 million was activated earlier this month somewhere in the world, with 1.3 million being activated by the day. At hat rate, you could expect to see Android No. 1 Billion activated before this time next year.

400 million. Apple has sold over 400 million iOS (iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch) devices in the past five years. You can expect them go past 500 million by middle of next year.

342 ppi. With the new iPhone 5 being launched with a display with 326 pixels per inch, and the Nokia Lumia with a 332 pixel per in display, Sony can hold on to the sharpest smartphone display in the world title with the 342 ppi displays on their Xperia S and Xperia acro S.

6.68 mm. While Apple claimed at its Apple iPhone 5 launch that it was the thinnest smartphone in the world at 7.6 mm, they seem to have forgotten about the 7.1 mm thin Motorola RAZRs and the world thinnest smartphone, or 6.7 mm Huawei Ascend P1s.

Google Changes The Chrome Logo

New Logo of Google Chrome
Google announced the changes of Google Chrome browser logo. The new logo looks more refined than the previous logo.

Google seems not to change the color scheme. Blend of red, yellow and green with a blue circle in it remain a main element.

The changes are quite striking is the three-dimensional effect on the old logo has been completely left out of Google. Chrome logo now looks elegant with 2D display.

According to Googles designer, Steve Rura, the change is to conform with the philosophy of its own Chrome.

HTC has removed the HDR microphone from HTC Ones specs sheet, promo pages and local official websites. This is a result of the legal battle between Nokia and the supplier - ST Microelectronics.

In case youve missed the news, HTCs flagship smartphone - the HTC One unwillingly got itself into trouble because of its HDR microphone. Nokia tried to issue a ban over the smartphones sales in the Netherlands, but failed to do so (the preliminary ban was lifted just a day after the granted injunction).

With the Arrival of LTE on the iPhone 5 the LTE Era Has Began

LTE arrives on the iPhone. With Apple making LTE available for iPhone 5s in the Philippines, I think it is safe to say that the LTE age has arrived. Getting LTE on your postpaid smart iPhone is as easy as applying the latest iOS 6.1 update. Your unlimited data plan, become a unlimited LTE data plan. No word from Globe, but I was told during Globe iPhone launch that Globe iPhone data plans would also automatically become LTE data plans.

With the Apple iPhone now having LTE, this now gives you a wider choice on LTE handsets since you now have both iOS and Android options. The Apple iPhone 5 joins the Huawei Ascent P1, Sony Ericsson Xperia V and  ZTE T82 as the Philippines first LTE capable phones.

Why place so much emphasize on LTE support for the iPhone 5? When it comes down to the mobile handsets that have the consumers mind share, it really comes down to three models: the Apple iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy Note II. For so long as all three handsets in the Philippines did not have LTE, phones with LTE were largely ignored.

Now that the Apple iPhone 5 has LTE active, it truly becomes a cutting edge handset, which will have an incremental upgrade later this year. No matter how much you like the large beautiful Super AMOLED displays and quad core processors on the Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy Note II, they feel like last years handsets soon to be replaced by a LTE capable model, or by a whole new model all-together.

0.4-inches from greatness. The other beneficiary of LTE arriving on the is the Sony Xperia V, which is an excellent smartphone. The problem with the Xperia V is that it came with a 4.3-inch display when the Android standard for a flagship phone was a 4.7-inch or larger screen. With the Apple iPhone 5 toting LTE, the Sony Xperia V becomes its only equivalent competitor. LTE will allow the Sony Xperia V to arise from the large shadow cast by Samsungs Galaxys.

Carrier wars. The Apple iPhone 5 will bring greater public awareness of what LTE is, than all of the marketing that Smart and Globe have poured in for the past one and a half years. With greater public awareness, the fight for which is the best network will focus on which network has the wider LTE coverage.

Rappler has a updated list of Globe Telecom LTE locations and has confirmed download speeds as fast as 35 Mbps:

  • Manila Golf and Country Club, Forbes Park
  • The Residences, Greenbelt 1
  • Rockwell Nestle; Palanan Avenue; Rockwell Condominiums
  • Along Ayala Ave. Ext. going to Kamagong St., Along Ayala Ave. Ext. going to Gil Puyat Ave.
  • Towards Ayala Ave. going to Buendia; towards Ayala Avenue going to Edsa; towards Dela Rosa
  • EDSA; South Luzon Expressway (SLEx); A. Arnaiz Ave.; Bangkal
  • Jupiter St.; Kalayaan; Bel-Air 1 Village; Bel-Air 2 Village
  • Gil Puyat Ave.; Bel-Air 2 Village; Salcedo Village
  • Pasong Tamo Extension; Dasmarinas Village
  • H.V. dela Costa St.; Valero St.; Salcedo Village
  • Indoor coverage - Manila Peninsula Hotel, Makati
  • McKinley Road; Forbes Park; Dasmarinas Village
  • Indoor coverage - Makati Medical Center

Smart LTE is now available in eleven cities. Displaying a list would be too long, and it would be easier to simply display them on maps.

With the LTE era having began, it looks like Globe and Samsung are caught playing catchup.

The Apple iPhone 5 What the iPhone 4S should have been

Apple has just announced the new iPhone 5. Unlike last years launched where all the rumors were wrong, this time around, all the rumors were dead on:

4-inch, 640 x 1136 display resolution - The new iPhone has a larger 4-inch display which migrates to the 16:9 aspect ration, the same as aspect ration as HD (720 x 1280) and Full HD (1080 x 1920), which makes the new iPhone display more optimized for playing video content.

The display is a sharp 326 ppi, altough Apple did not focus on this too much as it is not as sharp as the 4.3-inch 720p (720 x 1280) display with a 354 ppi on the Sony Xperia S. But I doubt anyone can tell which of the two is sharper.

Apple has confirmed that App will have to be updated to run on the new display, and we are pretty confident that App Developers will do so shortly. This result in all older versions of the iPhone as obsolete.

7.6 mm thin and 112 grams in weight - Following current trends the new iPhone is thinner, at 7.6 mm, which is pretty impressive being 0.2 mm thinner than the HTC One S. While the iPhone 5 is a lot thinner than the 9.3 mm iPhone 4S, I do not think users will notice that much.

The really welcome change is in the weight now at just 112 grams. The older iPhone 4 and 4S were heavy for their size at 140 grams. The iPhone 5 now has a larger display at a much lighter weight.

The appearance is similar to the iPhone 4/4S, but the phone is now taller with an aluminum back instead of glass.

HSPDA+ 21.1 Mbps, DC-HSDPA and LTE.  One area where the iPhone 4S disappointed was the 14.4 Mbps radio. This was fine is the US where no US carriers were running faster than HSDPA 14.4 and LTE. Philippine carriers do use HSDPA+ 21.1 towers.

LTE has also finally come to the iPhone. No surprises, but no disappointments either.

1 GB of RAM and new A6 chip. The 1 GB of RAM is double of the 512 MB of the iPhone 4/4S. Not too many details on the new processor but is has migrated to the 28 nm or 32 nm process as expected, which should result in improved battery life. Apple specifications place the battery life at the same level as the iPhone 4S. The processor is supposed to be twice as fast as that one found on the iPhone 4S.

Improved faster 8MP camera - The new 8 MP camera has a faster f/2.4 lens and also focuses and takes shots faster. Best to wait for the comparisons, but it does now add new features like Panorama mode.

Well, that is what I know of the new hardware for now. Nothing earth shattering but nothing disappointing. Whatever version of iPhone you current own, the iPhone 5 is a worthwhile upgrade. Once Apps are ported over to the iPhone 5, they probably wont be optimized for the older 2:3 displays on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4/4S.

Android owners will see nothing innovative in the Apple iPhone 5. Like I said, it is what the 4S should have been,

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic with Say and Play function

It’s been a while since Nokia has been in the news but that could also be because of LG’s KM900 and Samsung’s plethora of handsets making their way to MWC. Nokia has in fact announced an addition to their music range of handsets – the 5630XpressMusic.

This candy-bar styled, rather simplistic looking handset runs on a Symbian OS with an S60 UI and is equipped with -

  •       3 megapixel camera AF camera (LED flash)
  •          2.2-inch TFT LCD (240 x 320 pixels)
  •          N-Gage Gaming
  •          MicroSD card support (up to 16GB)
  •         3.5mm earphone socket
  •          Wi-Fi
  •          EDGE/GPRS, 3G (HSDPA)
  •          Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0
  •          FM radio with RDS
Apart from these, the 5630 will also feature Nokia’s Say and Play function that will let users simply speak the name of the song or artist and the handset will locate and play the track. This handset is also bundled with Nokia’s Comes with Music tag where it’s available already.

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic’s new tweaked homescreen shows the Contacts Bar that allows direct access to up to 20 friends or business contacts straight from there and provides a full communication history with these contacts including recent emails, messages, phone logs and photos shared. A shortcuts bar at the bottom of the homescreen also gives quick access to the most frequently used applications including music, radio, Web, N-Gage and photos. This is all very similar to the 5800’s but in a more confined space of course.

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic should start making its way to shelves by the second quarter of this year with a price tag of about Rs 12, 575 (200 EURO) exclusive of subsidies and taxes and a bundled 4GB microSD card.

Microsoft outsmarted Windows Phone OS rings in the new

The oft-renamed Windows mobile phone platform has never matched the glitz of the iPhone or BlackBerry. But is that about to change?

Among smartphone users, Windows Phone – the handset operating system formerly known as Windows Mobile – tends to not to provoke excitement. This is a space dominated by flashy handsets such as the iPhone, now in its third incarnation – with its OS X operating system also at 3.0 after just two years – and by buzz about new operating systems such as Googles Android and the Palm Pres WebOS.

Worse, Microsoft has had to play catchup to Apple, Google, Palm and even RIM, introducing an "app store" for Windows Phone after its rivals had done so – and after insisting that nobody was making much money from Apples iPhone App Store. In January 2007, its chief executive, Steve Ballmer, dismissed the iPhone as "the most expensive phone in the world, and it doesnt appeal to business customers because it doesnt have a keyboard, which makes it not a very good email machine". In fiscal 2008/9, the iPhone sold 20.4m units – compared with an estimated 18m Windows Phone licences. (Microsoft has not given numbers for the year, but has not said they were any higher than 2007-08.)

Call for more style

In short, Windows Phone has an image problem – which has not been altered by rebranding it.

Besides the endless name changes (from PocketPC to Windows Mobile to Phone), the Windows phone platform has been regarded as a dull tool for corporations instead of a strong player in the consumer market, and its user interface has never been much to write home about. Third-party vendors have gone so far as to build their own front ends to hide its perceived ugliness, though offerings such as HTCs Touch-Flo havent always been an entirely good thing, placing a further burden on the phones CPU.

Yet Windows Phone is the determined tortoise of the smartphone world, having been around since 1996. Microsoft hopes that its next version – snappily named 6.5 – will end its reputation as a plodding also-ran and spur it to catch up with flashier hares such as the iPhone and HTC Hero.

But is it enough? Roberta Cozza, principal analyst with Gartner, says no. "Its too little, too late. WinMo has been struggling in the consumer market. 6.5 is a small improvement in the look and feel, but its not comparable with efforts from other vendors."

The irony is that what had seemed like a sure thing – aiming a mobile form of Windows squarely at the business users who had it on their desktops – has turned out to be a mistake.

At its core, the OS offers enterprise solutions such as Office apps and support for Exchange, Microsofts email and collaboration application. This has made it popular with corporate IT departments; consumers, however, have been less impressed. And the BlackBerry was already there to grab market share.

All this is changing, says James McCarthy, Microsofts business manager for mobile communications. The next release, probably in September, "pays real attention to the consumer". Certainly, the new look places it much more firmly in the arena with the iPhone and LG Viewty.

The whole interface has had a makeover, aimed at making it much more intuitive and finger-friendly. Until now, using Windows Mobile has tended to require a stylus – fiddly, easy to break and to lose – because the screens on the devices have been small and packed with information.

A lot of care has been taken with the home screen. Theres no need to drill down to an application: if it tells you you have an email, you can launch it right away.

Microsoft will also launch a series of related products, from an app store to MyPhone, an online backup service that already works well in beta.

Perhaps the most important thing for any smartphone is the ecosystem that grows up around it. Apples App Store for the iPhone registered 1.5bn downloads in its first year, and rivals quickly followed: RIM, which makes the BlackBerry, has its App World, Nokia its oddly named Ovi World, and theres the Android Market for handsets running Googles Android. "Its a battle of the ecosystems," says Cozza. "Microsoft needs to come up with a strategy around an application marketplace."

Microsoft had left the apps business to partners such as Handango, but now would argue that its doing precisely that. With its app store Windows Marketplace for Mobile (its rubbish at names), it understands that it must offer at least some apps when it launches 6.5. There will be 20,000 available, and McCarthy says "Were busy making sure that they work with the handsets – theres a ton of work going into that."

Consumer challenge

The key question is whether Microsoft can be a big player in the consumer space. The figures suggest it has some catching up to do. According to Gartner, Windows Mobile has a steady 10% or so of the OS market – competing against proprietary Sony Ericsson and Samsung systems, as well as Symbian, which runs on Nokia and some other phones, and the offerings on the BlackBerry, the iPhone, Android and Palm. Its share of the smartphone market has fallen as the iPhone has wormed its way into corporations, by licensing Microsoft Exchange so that it can handle ActiveSync push notifications and calendaring.

However, says US-based analyst Michael Gartenberg, "of course its not late to the party". He reckons that the new version of Windows Mobile will "have a lot of appeal to consumers" and that it "builds on a solid foundation". Gartenberg, vice-president of strategy and analysis at Interpret, argues that other smartphone manufacturers still cannot match Windows Mobile as a business offering.

With a Windows Mobile phone, he says, you can not only take pictures and keep up with Facebook and Twitter, you can also edit a Microsoft Word document or an Excel spreadsheet and then email it to your colleagues – which you cant (yet) do with an iPhone. Business people who need that are also consumers who want to keep up with their social networks, he notes, adding that Windows Mobile offers the best of both worlds.

Cozza concedes that Windows Mobile is "a strong platform for enterprise", but adds that for a smartphone to succeed, it needs to blur the dividing line between business and consumer users. RIM, with the BlackBerry, has done that smartly, she says.

But, counters Gartenberg, Windows Mobile already does that. What Microsoft needs to do now is to tell the story of its latest version of the system. "Theres a lot of negative perception about WinMo," he says, adding that theres everything to play for.

"Six platforms cant survive," he says. "The battle is hardly over yet. "Cozza is more cautious: "We will have to wait and see," she says.
